After activating the elevator in the beginning of chapter 7 you will come to this point in the game. The most important thing is to have the right weapon and enough ammo. If you’d try it with normal weapons like the plasma cutter you’d need to hit the yellow glowing spots on the tripod’s arms everytime and this would take too long. One hit with the detonator is enough to get rid of such a necromorph. You don’t need to upgrade the detonator at all! Of course it will make things a bit easier to have it upgraded but it’s really not necessary. There are 22 in total so make sure to have at least 22 detonator mines with you, otherwise you will fail. Don’t forget to go back to the last save station before you try this. You will probably need a couple tries. In case you want to upgrade the detonator you can simply buy back all the power nodes you used for an other upgraded tool (costs 5000). You want to see the full Dead Space 2 Guide?
